Best known as kumu hula of Kuhai Hālau O Kawaikapuokalani Pā ‘Olapa Kahiko, Frank Kawaikapuokalani Hewett is also a noted Hawaiian cultural leader, an award-winning composer and recording artist.
At an early age he learned hula and healing arts from his maternal grandmother. He continued his studies in hula with Edith Kanaka‘ole and Emma DeFries. His song writing and vocal talents were first expressed in 1983 with the release of his first album, Makalapua ‘Oe. He has continued to write songs and chants, many of which were recorded by other artists and have earned him numerous Nā Hōkū Hanohano Awards. Over his career he has released numerous recordings featuring his compositions.
Hewett has been an instructor of Hawaiian language, culture and hula at Windward Community College on O‘ahu. Over the years he has served as director and consultant of Hawaiian culture programs at the Royal Lahaina Resort (on Maui), at the Kaua‘i Beach Resort, and at the Waimānalo Health Center. He travels extensively to Japan and to the Mainland conducting hula workshops and training kumu hula.
